Typical Turkish breakfast Typical Turkish breakfast

In Turkey, breakfast is the main meal of the day. A spread that might be fitting for Thanksgiving in America is something Turks have every day of the week. You cannot come to Turkey without having a Turkish breakfast.

When you are ordering breakfast, typically what you want is called “serpme kahvaltı” which is essentially a family-style breakfast for two or more people.

A normal, serpme kahvaltı breakfast includes things like hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, cucumbers, a variety of jellies, honey with butter or kaymak (a kind of middle ground between butter and cheese), nutella, three or more types of cheeses, fruit, olives, kahvaltı sos (literally “breakfast sauce” made with tomato paste, olive oil, nuts, and spices), eggs with tomato (menemen), melted cheese and cornmeal (muhlama), sausage, simit (like a sesame bagel), poğaça (pastry), pişi (like a funnel cake donut), börek, açma, and gözleme,
