To make sure you don’t get lost, and that you have access to Google Translate, it is very much recommended to get a sim card for your phone. You can (and should) buy these inside Istanbul Airport before leaving to come to the city.

When you exit baggage claim into the arrivals hall, turn and walk left. There will be two shops on your left hand side, Turkcell and TurkTelekom. TurkTelekom will give you the best service but, really, either of them is fine.

Vodafone is another option but it’s not a great one. The local providers are probably a better choice. There is a Vodafone place in the arrivals hall as well.

To be able to use a sim card, your phone must be unlocked from your home carrier. If it is locked, they can also let you rent a small, battery powered wifi hotspot. It uses the normal mobile cell networks and you connect to it like you would any other wifi signal.
